What to Do With a Broken iPod

From time to time you may have the need to repair your iPod or to have someone else repair it for you. iPods are, of course, expensive devices and many consumers appreciate anything that can be done to curtail costs. iPod repair is appealing because you maintain control and you are more careful not to damage the music and files on your player.

Soldering Gun

Unfortunately there is not a single set of rules or guidelines to follow to help you repair your iPod. This is because every problem is unique, as well as every player, and requires a remedy specific to the problem. The first step is to have a proper diagnosis. There are multiple trouble-shooting manuals that can be found through a simple Google search. For those who are very bold, you can always send your iPod away to a professional shop that offers a free diagnosis.

Soldering Gun

When you search for repair manuals, be sure that you find the one that is specific to your iPod. Each generation of the iPod is slightly different than the previous and you want to make sure that the information you have is accurate and dependable. The repair manuals are readily available on the Internet.

Once you have found the correct manual be sure you have the correct tools. You can usually find a pocket tool kit at most hardware stores. More advanced tools, like a soldering gun, may be needed. Like with any electronic storage device, be sure to BACK UP your data before you begin.

You may be surprised that some repairs are easy to do yourself. They will require a steady hand and some patience but you may be able to do it. If you can, it will save you some money. However, be sure to follow the instructions very carefully. iPods are complex pieces of technology and can easily be damaged. If you are nervous about process you may want to consider hiring an expert.

There are many companies out there who specialize in iPod repair. They will be able to quickly, accurately, and safely diagnose and repair whatever problem you have with your portable music device. Naturally you'll pay for their expertise. However, it tends to be worth it. They have access to lots of old iPods that they can use for parts should your be damaged and they have the experience in repairing many iPods - your won't be the first one they try.

There are positives and negatives to each route. If you repair your iPod yourself you run the risk of doing further damage but you have the opportunity to save yourself some money. If you outsource the repair you'll pay a higher price but you'll have the security of knowing it will be done right and your music will be protected.

The first thing you have to understand about common PS3 problems is their cause. Most of the time, probably about 95% it is a heat issue. The units run hot inside, especially the 20 and 60 GB varieties. Over time, this excess heat causes the solder on the motherboard or central processing unit to break down. When the solder melts, the connections become loose resulting in repair issues. If you are yet to experience, any problems with your Playstation 3, it is a good idea to take extra precautions, such as dusting frequently and setting the unit on a firm surface and not carpet.

Build Your Own Tattoo Coils for Tattoo Machines

Tattoo coils, or you can call it wrap coils are made from insulated copper wire and iron, are the electromagnetic heart of tattoo machines. The coils conduct electricity and give power to the guns. You can wrap your own tattoo coils or buy from online tattoo suppliers, which will not be very costly.

Soldering Gun

Commonly, for tattoo guns, the normal sizes are 8, 10 and 12 wrap coils, among which, 10 wrap coils tattoo machines own the biggest popularity. The sizes are determined by the layers of wire wrapped around the core of the coil. The more layers it has, the more power the gun will have and the bigger sizes of tattoo needles will be required.

Soldering Gun

Ok, let's see how to wrap your own tattoo coils.

First, you can hold the widest end of plastic bobbin with one hand and make the insulated copper wire wrapped around it 2 or 3 three times by your the other hand. Remember to leave about 4 inches of wire sticking out for the next steps.

Then, wrap the wire around the bobbin. Pay attention to make the coils tight and massive when wrapping, and when you finish, all the parts of the bobbin's body will be well-covered.

And then, pull the wire back to the other side of the bobbin and begin another wrapping to create more than one layer. Each layer should start from the same end. At least, eight layers are needed.

Now you need another 4 inches of wire sticking out. To stop the coils from conducting electricity, you should wrap them with electrical tape. Then cut an inch of shrink-wrap sleeve and heat it to fit around the coils.

Make another wrap coil following the above steps. Then put two next to each other, bind their starting wires together, which are left sticking out in the first step. Push the remaining two wires to the correct length, decided by the tattoo machine you use and then remove about 3/4 inch of insulation away by the help of a soldering gun. After that, place rubber insulation around the two back wires, leaving 1/2 inch of wire poking out.

You may need some tools helping to bend the wires towards you to in line with the solder lugs. Then put the capacitor in place to make each end be firmly soldered to the wires and soldering lugs.

Get a soldering gun to solder the wires, lugs, capacitor and the front twisted wires together. The last thing, get a 1/4 inch shrink-wrap sleeve for the base of soldering lugs, so that the gun will not short out.

I've shown you all the detailed steps of tattoo coils wrapping. You may try to make your own tattoo coils for tattoo machines now!

Weller Soldering Station

The soldering station is a great tool for those who love do-it-yourself activities or for those who need to repair something. This tool is a great partner even for housewives who need to keep the house fixed and for students who need to get their projects done. The station consists of a soldering iron, holder, sponge and a power unit.

Soldering Gun

The Weller soldering kit is the most recommended product. The Weller brand was started by Karl Weller, a radio repairer, back in 1945. In his desire to make his job easier, we produced the first soldering station. As of now, Weller brand is under the ownership of Cooper Industries. Many reviews and recommendations will point you to the Weller brand for a great product.

Soldering Gun

The soldering station kit is the better, if not the best, replacement for an individual soldering iron or gun. This tool can give you better performance without spending big amount of cash because this comes in affordable and reasonable price.

This tool should be heavy enough to be stable or hard to be moved when laid down on a surface, but light enough to be portable. Portability should be one of the major considerations you should take when buying a soldering station. If you are a daddy who needs to fix the house, a housewife who needs to maintain order inside the house, DIY lover or a hobbyist, or a student, you would always want to save on time and effort and portable stuffs can give you that, especially on soldering kit. This tool is also great for industrial purposes or manufacturing.

  • Multi-purpose tool kit, for soldering, hot air blowing, and torch needs
  • Five interchangeable tips, for a variety of applications
  • Self-igniting, cordless, anti-flare soldering iron, for ease of use
  • Piezoelectric ignition system, requires no electrical connection
  • Child-resistant mechanism at trigger, for safety

Blazer SI-100 Excalibur Multi-Purpose Butane Torch and Hot Air Soldering Kit Overview

The Blazer SI-100 Excalibur, multi-purpose, butane torch and hot air soldering kit is a tool kit that provides tools for soldering, hot air blowing and torch flame needs. The torch creates a precise flame emitting from a nozzle head, allowing direct heat application to an object. It is commonly used for detailed purposes such as brazing, plumbing, soldering, heating, jewelry making, and culinary, dental, and lab applications. Tools within the kit are also used for electronic, automotive, woodworking, lapidary, and general maintenance.

The SI-100 is a multi-purpose tool kit, providing a self-igniting and cordless soldering iron, hot air blower and refillable butane gas torch. The set includes five, interchangeable tip choices: reflector, hot air blower, knife, one 3.5-millimeter chisel and one 3.0-millimeter diagonal. It also comes with a wrench, sponge, and one tube of 60/40 coiled silver tube of solder. The torch features a child-resistant mechanism, and an instant ignition switch.

The torch houses a piezoelectric ignition system, which is based on a pressurized molecular reaction, and requires no electric connection. Piezoelectric energy occurs when the trigger is activated, releasing a small, spring-loaded internal hammer that strikes a crystal, producing a spark and resulting in gas flame ignition.

With a maximum flame temperature of 2,500 degrees F, the torch has a 7.0-gram gas capacity, weighs 4.9 ounces and is 9.0 (l) inches. The case measures 10.25 (l) x 4.38 (w) x 1.5 (h) inches. This product is intended strictly for use in professional and industrial environments. In accordance with federal regulations, home use of this product is prohibited.

Since 1985, Blazer Products has created an array of professional and industrial tools and equipment. Located in Farmingdale, NY, the company manufactures a variety of torches and ultrasonic cleaners. Blazer Products is known worldwide for its original micro torch products.

The SI-100 kit comes in a hard shell carrying case, and the torch operates with a standard butane canister (sold separately).

What's the Difference Between a Soldering Iron and Gun?

Soldering is a technique that has many applications both industry related or recreational. Essentially, it is the process of melting a tin and copper mixture, called solder, so that it binds with other metals, but the tools can also be used to melt or cut other materials. The unique techniques for these applications involve a high level of craftsmanship, but can be learned quickly and perfected with practice. The two main tools used for this will be either a soldering iron or a soldering gun. Although these tools are similar, their applications will vary based on their inherent nature.

Soldering Gun

The Iron

Soldering Gun

The soldering iron is perfect for binding fragile electronics and delicate jewelry. The gun runs from a range of 15-30 watts, reaching up to 350 F. This allows it to easily melt the solder or other light metals in a matter of minutes. The tool is capable of completing procedures that require precision as apposed to intense melting power. This is why the iron is generally used for binding smaller materials: In electronics it is used to create currents by properly bonding metal conductors and in jewelry it can be used to successfully bind precious metals without damaging them.

The Gun

The soldering gun is intended for applications that may require more heat than the iron. The robust output of the gun ranges from 100-240 watts, allowing it to reach degrees up to 2400 F, so it can be used in jobs that require melting heavier solder or a cutting through stronger metal. For example: Plumbing uses the gun to seal copper piping, stained glass artisans use it to fill the space between the glass shapes, and metal worker will even use it to cut precise shapes out of sheet metal.

Although these tools both essentially serve the same function, heating and melting metals, based on their power they must be used for completely different purposes. This just shows how the application of soldering is so broad; it isn't limited to one application, and even requires different strength tools. Therefore, when trying to understand the difference between a soldering iron or gun, it is more important to understand what needs to be accomplished with the tool. The soldering iron does not have the capacity to melt strong metals or solder and the soldering gun will be completely impractical for precise electronic soldering or crafting jewelry.

Soldering Tattoo Needles

As a tattoo artist, you are more than likely to have found that the costs of tattooing can be great. However, some costs can be cut back considerably if you have the time, and knowledge to do so.

Soldering Gun

Making your own tattoo needles can save you money, but is it worth the time? That is something that you will need to ask yourself. Every artist will develop their own technique in needle making. Although, it is more common to purchase pre-made, and pre-sterilized tattoo needles.

Soldering Gun

Tattoo needles are formed by soldering a grouping of needles onto a needle bar, or back stem. The needle bars length will range from 4.5-5 inches in length. All needle bars made for tattooing have a loop, or eyelet at one end.

The groupings of needles can be made in several different sizes and shapes, however the more common groupings are rounds, flats, and mags (magnums). Rounds are more commonly used for lining, or portrait work. Flats for shading, and mags for fill work.

Rounds are made by soldering the needles in a circular pattern, tighter rounds are more common for line work while looser rounds are more suited to shading. Flats are soldered side by side in a row, and can as well be either "loose" or "tight" configuration, although most artists prefer a looser grouping of needles. Mags can be a single, or double stack much like flats they are soldered side by side, however they are separated into upper, and lower rows, or they are double stacked.

Making your own needles is a meticulous process, and you will need to have the proper set up to do so. Remember, just because you are making your own needles there are still sterilization steps that need to be taken. Whether pre-made needles bought in bulk, or self-made needles they will need to be packaged individually and autoclaved before use.

Soldering and Desoldering

The subject of soldering is one that most members of the general public do not encounter every day. Yet it forms an integral part of modern life. Whilst most people are unfamiliar with the art of soldering, they rely daily on items that contain soldered components such as mobile phones and personal computers.

Soldering Gun

The principles of soldering are clear. There is a basic general knowledge of the procedure. This has come about due to the use of soldering irons in hobbies such as model making, and perhaps model railway construction. Desoldering is a lesser recognised procedure, but is just as important, especially concerning the repair and possible recycling of our modern everyday gadgets.

Soldering Gun

The art of removing soldered components is one which requires the correct tools. The key is not to overheat and thereby damage any of the surrounding components on the circuit board. Whilst they can be used for a variety of different applications, today more than ever temperature controlled soldering and desoldering stations are being used to repair or modify items that most people would throw away, presuming them to be broken and therefore worthless.

A basic soldering iron is something that many of us would find in the home. Not so recognisable perhaps is the desoldering station. More likely to be found in a workshop specifically dealing with repairs, the desoldering station allows components to be removed through a targetted heating process. The temperature and flow of the heat can be controlled, reducing the risk of the overheating of surrounding areas. Once at the desired temperature, the solder becomes molten. A high pressure vacuum gun, with a specific nozzle is held in place and activated. The sodler is sucked away and the component can be removed with ease, either with a suction gun, or perhaps a pair of tweezers. A variety of desoldering nozzles are available to ensure that heat is directed only to the part of the job that requires it.

Her jewelry soldering with a soldering iron

It is common for the jewelry makers to have the skills to use the tools. One integral skill which is must owned by the jewelry makers is using the soldering tool to solder jewelry.

Soldering Gun

Some people consider that it is safer to melt and attach the jewelry using the iron. You will also find it is easier to join the jewelry with that tool than using the blow torch. However, to do that, you will need the technique which is different from the old torch soldering. You also need to pay attention in choosing the metal. The iron can only be used on the basic metals like the tin or the copper.
